The problem is the backplate where the pins are inserted - they are way too tight. Once you have pried the backplate away, take a small screwdriver and gently push to the side both the prongs that secure each of the pins (see picture). Do it for all the pin holes in the backplate making sure you don't overdo it where the pin doesn't even make the contact. It will be a lot easier to pull out the faceplate when you subsequently need to change the batteries. I can not review how this thermostat works because I never installed it. After reading the instructions one of the first things that needs to be done is to install 2 AAA batteries. I could not open the cover because it was so tight and I thought I would break the plastic cover. I didn't want to break it so I returned it to Home Depot. I asked the customer service rep to open the cover and they couldn't open it without prying it open with a screwdriver.

We got the same thermostat off the shelf and had the same problem. This thermostat is designed to be mounted to the wall with 2 plastic drywall anchors. The batteries must be replaced every 6 - 12 months. Trying to open the cover after it's mounted to the wall would result with pulling it out of the drywall.

This is simply unacceptable. Rated 5 out of 5 by Wildbill from The thermostat was easy to install, it came with lettered stickers to mark each wire and the ins. The thermostat was easy to install, it came with lettered stickers to mark each wire and the instructions were easy to follow. The unit is easy to setup and works great for saving money on electric bills, the built-in light makes the screen easy to read without having to turn on a light. Due to my work we had to move quite a bit and because of the low cost of the unit I just buy a new one instead of just taking the old one. The only bad thing I found is that it takes 2 men and a boy to remove the cover to replace the batteries without pulling the mounting screws out of the wall. Install was easy, though it do. The display is a little smaller than I expected, but it's alright. Install was easy, though it doesn't include a wall plate.

My problem is that the unit I received has some kind of dirt or dust stuck back in the corner of the display that is visible when the backlight is on. It is worse in person than the photo shows. Contacting support didn't help; they tried to tell me there was a non-existent decal on the display I forgot to peel and then to return it to the store despite the paper insert in the product box with a big red stop sign telling me to do the exact opposite.

Annoying, but not worth undoing the install and returning to the store at this point. Quality control is apparently an issue. I will probably try another brand in the future. Rated 5 out of 5 by Popanuge from This RTH2300 thermostat was a replacement of a Honeywell RTH221.

The 2300 also allows for different settings for the weekend. It is easy to install. Simply disconnect each wire from the old unit and wire it to the new one.

There are wire tags supplied to keep the wires from getting crossed. A complete owner's manual is supplied in English and Spanish. Per the owner's manual, this unit is compatible with: * Gas, oil or electric furnace.

* Central air conditioner * Hot water system with or without pump * Millivolt system * Central heating and cooling system * Heat pump without auxiliary/backup heat My only beef, (which is not a fault in the thermostat) is that due to the different shape of the RTH2300 relative to the shape of my old RTH221, I had to patch up the old mounting holes and paint the area around the unit. Rated 4 out of 5 by Robey from Nice basic, inexpensive unit.

Installed unit as manual instructed but when I turned the electric. Nice basic, inexpensive unit. Installed unit as manual instructed but when I turned the electric back on, heat/ac didin't work. Called support and after a frustrating 20 minute call of not being able to understand the 'tech's' broken english, ended that attempt and called again with the same result. Called a heating service(60/hr) who discovered a tripped reset button on my heating unit, then everything worked. Honeywells 'money saving' support is overseas so good luck if you need help; called at 1pm est.

We had a fancy thermostat that was nice for programming but unfortunately the touch screen stopped working. I wanted a nice and easy to use, simple thermostat. This one is great. The only issue we had with it was when installing, our furnace AND air conditioner would both turn on! My husband found a review online that someone posted that said they had to insert the blue wire into the yellow adapter.

Air conditioner doesn't turn on anymore when we turn on our heat! Hope this helps! Rated 1 out of 5 by TK from We bought this to replace our 20 year old Lux programmable thermostat. After about 20 minutes of trying to pry the back off it finally came off and all of the internal components went flying across the room.

Put it back together to make sure it was together properly and tried opening it again. After fighting another 10 minutes and deciding a jackhammer would have problems getting this apart, we've decided to return it and get a different thermostat.
